The name was given by the name of a factory established over here by the East India Company of England, in 1771. Malda is situated at the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindri rivers and was known for the major river port of the Hindu capital of Pandua. Today it acts as the base for visiting Gaur and Pandua.
