Durgapur was founded in 1950 in the state of West Bengal, India, by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was the chief ministers of West Bengal. It is situated on the bank of river Damodar and near the largest coal fields in Ranigunj - Dhanbad area. It is also famous for its rice fields as they are considered to be one of the largest producing zones of the country. The nearest major city is Kolkata, which is around 175 kms from Durgapur.
