Salem is situated in Tamil Nadu. The city is located near the other major cities of the state like Bengaluru, Chennai and Coimbatore. The region is surrounded with hills and landscapes that are dotted with hillocks. The word 'Salem' has been derived from Sela or Shalya, which refers to a country around the hills. As per local beliefs, Tamil poetess Avvaiyar was born in Salem. The city houses many places of interests that are not only popular but also attract tourists. Yercaud is a hill resort in the city that was once surrounded by Kadu forest. It is also considered as the least expensive hill station in the country. Lady's Seat is a natural rock structure that gives a panoramic view to the visitors.

There are also remote sites of beauty such as Kiliyur Falls.The city is surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of hills formed by the Nagaramalai to the north, the Jeragamalai to the south, the Kanjanamalai to the west, and Godumalai to the east During the month of July, Mariamman festival is celebrated in Salem for 15 days. Here lot of Mariamman (Hindu Goddess) temples are attracts large number of tourists. This is the best period to visit here.
