Athirappally located at the entrance to Sholayar ranges is at a distance of 78 kms from Kochi (Cochin). This prominent waterfall is a popular picnic spot of Kerala. Athirappally Falls is about 80 feet high in the forest area presenting some bewitching sights. This untouched waterfalls combined with the greenery infuses freshness into any tired soul. This Falls join the Chalakkudy River after plummeting a drop of 80 feet. The beautiful waterfalls of Athirampally and Vazhachal (Prounced as vaazhachaal) are among the nature’s most relaxing places of the state. These waterfalls is one of the best places in India to re-capture a real sense of the classical idea of the 'Picturesque' - not just calm and sweet, but something wild and natural. It Starts calmly from the high ranges, and crashes through gorges overhung with trees.

The waterfalls itself is located in a place of scenic natural beauty. Behind the waterfalls it is possible to see the mountains covered with thick dense forests. The waterfalls itself can be seen from many different locations. There are special pathways which take people very close to the spot where the water is falling. Even before reaching the spot one can feel tiny droplets of water falling from the splashing waterfalls. The best time to see the water falls are during the rainy season between June and November. During this period the river will be full of water and the waterfall appears splendid. During the dry season the amount of water in the river will be less and the waterfall during this period becomes very narrow. There is plenty of wildlife in the forests around Athirapally and it is also one of the most biodiverse regions in Kerala.
