Gorur dam forms the Hemavathi reservoir built in the 1900s across the Hemavathi river. The dam is named after a famous Kanada literature personality called Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar.
This Dam is one of the 33 minor irrigation dams in Hassan district of Karnataka. Located about 10 km from Hassan town in the Western Ghats, This Dam is a popular tourist destination. The dam, which was built by Devaraja Wodeyar IV in 1871, provides irrigation to about 15,000 acres of land and acts as a check dam for excess water from other reservoirs. The reservoir can store water up to 4500 acre-feet and has a catchment area of 40 square km.
This Dam is a small village in Hassan Karnataka. Gorur Dam is located at a distance of around 13 km from Hassan, which is the district headquarters. Gorur Dam has a population of around 2,127 according to the 2011 Census. This village has a population density of 111 persons per square kilometer. The people living in this place speak Kannada as their native language.
