15 kilometres south from Leh, the Shey Monastery was built in 1655 within the Shey palace complex. The palace was the former residence of the pre-Tibetan royal family. The palace houses a 12 meter high copper statue of Lord Buddha which is plated with gold and is the largest of its kind and covers three stories in the building.
