Erenhot — Travel Guide
Erenhot is a county-level city of the Xilin Gol League, in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, located in the Gobi Desert along the Sino-Mongolian border, across from the Mongolian town of Zamyn-Uud. The border town is a rail port city and the largest hub for cross border trade between Mongolia and China. Erenhot was built along with the Jining-Erenhot International Railway. Beijing-Ulan Bator-Moscow International Railway was put into operation in Jan., 1956 and Erenhot was authorized to set up in Jan. 1966. In Jan., 1985, Erenhot was upgraded to a prefecture-level city. State Department listed Erenhot as one of the 13 open city along the border.
