Silvassa is known for its scenic beauty, wildlife sanctuaries, beaches and facilities for water sports. Capital of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Silvassa lies between Gujarat and Maharashtra. Silvassa comprised 72 villages and was ruled by the Marathas till 1779. Later, it was offered to the Portuguese following a treaty. The many Roman-Catholic churches and stone walls stand testimony to the Portuguese rule as does the name Silvassa, which comes from the Portuguese word Silva or wood.

Silvassa is a treat for adventure freaks with several water parks based activities available to its visitors. It is also a paradise for those looking for handmade products. Kilvani Road is the main market in Silvassa where handmade products like Warli paintings and paper bags are sold. Silvassa has no rail line or airport .The nearest rail link is also at Vapi, which is 18 kilometers away. Silvassa is home of the Varli people and has a tribal population though recently it has developed into a major industrial area with a number of industries being set up here.
