Baoshan is a prefecture-level city in western Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. Baoshan is the second biggest metropolitan area in western Yunnan after Dali. The area was called Yongchang in ancient times. Historically, it was the first residence for human settlers in western Yunnan. During the middle period of the Warring States Period, it was the center of ancient Ailao Kingdom. As the Ailao Kingdom turned to decline, Yongchang Shire, the origin of Baoshan City was established in the year of 69 of the Eastern Han Dynasty as the second largest shire in the country. It was during the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties that it successively belonged to two ethnic regimes, Nanzhao State and Dali State. The name of Baoshan was first used in 1524.
Located in downtown of Baoshan, this museum is one of the newly built prefecture-level museums of Yunnan province. It stands as the (cultural) landmark of Baoshan as well. Facing the north, the museum building is designed in a profile of an ancient bronze drum that was very popular in the south of China in the ancient times. Wofo Temple (Reclining Buddha Temple) at the foot of Yunyang Mountain 16 kilometers north of Baoshan city proper has the biggest jade Buddha in China.

Baoshan canes growing in the forest in the frontier area in Tengchong County are tough and thin, which makes it a good material for things like chairs and boxes. People in Tengchong are good at the knitting of the cane material and the cane handcrafts are welcome by the consumers. The handcrafts made from cane are very popular in the city. Silk products from Baoshan has long been selling very well in Southeast and West Asian countries and enjoys a very good market at home and abroad.
