It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. It is a pre-colonial town on the west bank of the Hooghly River. It used to be the major trading centre during Danish India, before British East India Company acquired the Denmark’s holdings in India in 1845. William Carey, the first Baptist missionary to India, founded the Serampore College in 1818. The college boasts of a library that was once the country’s largest storehouse of literature.
