Hugli Chinsurah is one of the resourceful districts of West Bengal, which was established in 1795. The namesake river, Hugli , flows through the East of the district. The landmass is about 3,149 sq. km in area and Chinsurah is located in the heart of the district. the town was a river port during the 15th century. This district has rich heritage, with the great Bengali kingdom of Bhurshut. Vasco da Gama was the first Portuguese sailor to reach this district. In 1536 Portuguese traders obtained permission from Sultan Mahmud Shah to trade in this district. The Hugli River at that time was the main route of transportation. Eventually, the river became one of the most commercial and largest ports of Bengal.



This is among the most vibrant district of Kolkata which has great significance for Bengalis because it is the birthplace of the eternal Bengali novelist, Sarat Chadra Chatterjee. With this it is also the sacred place where Sri Ramakrisna Paramhamsa and his consort Sarada Devi spent a major part of their life. The rich past, historical legacy and many of attractions make this place a most sought after destinations for tourists.
