The name Alipurduar has three parts. The first part 'Ali' is derived from the name of Col Hedayat Ali Khan who had leaved here and fought war with Bhutan. 'Pur' meaning residence and word 'Duar' has its origin in the name of the region 'Dooars'. The original name was Alipur meaning the place where Ali leaved, the Duar was added to distinguish it from the Alipore of Calcutta. The subdivision is located at the extreme east of West Bengal bordering the state of Assam.
Situated on the north bank of Kaljani River, Alipurduar is the most important town of the district. The town is a gateway to Bhutan and North Eastern states of India. Alipurduar derives its name from the late Col. Hedayat Ali Khan who did admirable service in the Bhutan war and was stationed here as first Extra-Assistant Commissioner.
