Kathgodam :- "The Gateway of Kumaon Hills" is situated at the foothills of Himalayas in Nainital District, is the terminus of the broad gauge line of North East Railways connecting Nainital with Delhi, Dehradun & Howarah line from Bareilly. The Distance from Kathgodam to Nainital is 35 km and 6 km is immediately north of Haldwani. Kathgodam is considered the twin city of Haldwani and the beauty of Uttarakhand reflects in the small town of Kathgodam.In 1942, the Haldwani - Kathgodam Municipal Council was founded and is still the second largest Municipal Council in the state after Haridwar. The railway line was extended to Haldwani in 1884 and even today, it is the last railway station to Kumaon region and is the base station for visiting Nainital and other hills. Tracing the history of this region, the 14th century Mughal history mentions Gyan Chand belonging to the Chand dynasty, who was awarded the Bhabhar Terai region till the Ganges River, from the Delhi Sultanate.

There is an ashram called the Harikhan that is located nearby and this is also worth a visit while travelling to the town of Kathgodam. One can also visit the dam that has been built over the River Gola. This is a popular picnic spot in the region.
