Tharangambadi, is a town in the Nagapattinam district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It lies 15 kilometres north of Karaikal, near the mouth of a distributary of the Kaveri River. Tharangambadi is the headquarters of Tharangambadi taluk while its name means "place of the singing waves". Tharangambadi was ruled by the Danish. The remnants of Danish influence left in the town include a gateway with the Danish royal seal. The place looks Scandinavian, with Danish bungalows and 18th-century churches. When the Danish navy landed at the Coromondel Coast, the Dutch captain Roland Crappe realized that it was a perfect place for trading. An admiral of the Danish navy, Ove Gjedde, negotiated a treaty with the Thanjavur king, Vijaya Raghunatha Nayak, on behalf of King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway.
Tharangambadi is famous for tourist attractions such as the Danish Fort, Danish Museum, and the village itself. It is a small, wind-blown town with a populace of fisherman.
