Sankarankovil is a second largest municipality in the Tirunelveli district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Sankaran means Lord Shiva and Koil means temple. Since Lord Shiva had abided at this town it is known as Sankarankoil. In the ancient period it was called Sankara Nayanar koil and Sankaran Koil. Sankarankoil is also known as Sangai. It is situated at Tirunelveli District and 56 km away from Thirunelveli City. Sankarankovil is the second largest town in the district. It is very noted for the "Adi Thabasu" festival. In older times, the city was called as Sankaranayinarkoil. Even now it is called as Sankarankovil.
Sankarankoil got its name because of the famous temple Sankara Narayanar. Since Lord Shiva had abided at this town it is known as Sankarankoil. the famous Sankara Narayanan temple is housed. It is also said to be home to the deity named Avudai Ambalar. Sankarankoil is not only an important Shakthi and Shiva Sthala but also famous as the place where the almighty is worshipped in unison as "Shiva Vishnu Swaroopam". It is very famous for "Adi Thavasu" festival.
