Rameswaram is situated in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. Located in the Pamban Island, it lies 50 km from Mannar Island. It is located at the tip of the Indian peninsula, Gulf of Mannar. One of the Char Dhams, Rameswaram has played a significant part in Hindu mythology. As per the Hindu mythology, it is here that Lord Rama built a bridge across the sea to reach Lanka as he had to rescue his wife Sita who had been abducted by Ravana. During the British rule, it was declared a panchayat union. In 1958, it was made a township and finally in 2004, was declared a municipality. As it is a pilgrim centre, the people mostly earn their livelihood from the tourism industry. Apart from the sweets and other items of offering to the gods; toys, idols of deities and similar products are also sold in the city.Besides the main Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, there are many other places of tourists' interest in Rameswaram.
