Venuvana Vihara

Lord Buddha had become popular during his life time and had earned a good many disciples among whom some were rulers. One of such rulers was king Bimbisar of Magadha. Bimbisar, out of respect, donated a monastery to Lord Buddha which is called Venuvana Vihar.



Jivaka Mango Garden

Rajgir

Seat of the Royal Physician’s dispensary where Lord Buddha was once brought to have wound dressed by Jivaka, the royal physician during the reign of Ajatshatru and Bimbisara.



Gridhakuta or Vultures Peak

Rajgir

Another major tourist attractions in Rajgir, this is the site where Lord Buddha preached many inspiring sermons here and also set in motion his second wheel of Law and for three months every year during the rainy season. Today Buddha Sangha of Japan have constructed a massive modern stupa, the Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda), at the top of the hill.



Ajatashatru Fort

Ajatashatru the king of ancient Magadha is believed to have ruled from this fort for long. Inside is the Ajatashatru's Stupa. Built by Ajatashatru (6th century B.C.), the king of Magadha during the Buddha’s time. The 6.5 sq.meter Ajatshatru’s Stupa is also believed to have been built by him.



Jain Temples

On hill crests around Rajgir, far in the distances one can see about 26 Jain Temples. They are difficult to approach for the untrained, but make exciting trekking for those in form.



Bimbisara Jail

Rajgir

His impatient son and heir, Ajatashatru, imprisoned King Bimbisara here. The captive king chose this site for his incarceration, for, from this spot he could see Lord Buddha climbing up to his mountain retreat atop the Griddhakuta hill. There is a clear view of the Japanese Pagoda. The stupa of peace was built on the top of the hill.



Swarna Bhandar

This is believed to be the king Bimbisara treasury - a cave chamber hollowed out of a single massive rock. According to folklores the treasure is still intact. Archaic monuments literally dot over the land of Rajgir.



Shanti Stupa

Rajgir Vishwa Shanti Stupa [World Peace Pagoda] was built in 1969, by Japanese as a symbol on world peace. It is built on top of the Ratnagiri Hills. It is one of the 6 peace pagodas in the country and 80 peace pagodas in the world. It’s built to spread the message of peace and non-violence. The structure is built completely in marble and comprises four golden statues of Lord Buddha with each representing his life periods of birth.
