Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer

Once a sleepy desert city, Jaisalmer has transformed itself into a major tourist destination of India. Situated amid picturesque Thar Desert, the Jaisalmer city commands premiere position among the tourist attractions scattered all over the desert land of Rajasthan. The Jaisalmer city is revered both by Indians as well as foreign tourists. Like various other cities of Rajasthan, you will discover different facets of Jaisalmer as you explore this wonderful city with us. Tough there are historical monuments scattered all over the city but the Jaisalmer Fort will immediately command your attention. Made of sand stones and locally known as Sonar Quila, the Jaisalmer Fort is a dominating structure amidst sands. The Jaisalmer city is also known for its old mansions, better known as Havelis. Among many of them you will find Salim ji ki haveli and Nathmal ji ki haveli as the most striking. There are other monuments too, which are equally important because of their distinct and individual architecture. The amalgamation of ancient and the medieval era architecture will catch your fancy.

Jaisalmer literally means ‘the Hill Fort of Jaisal’. The desert city is also called the Golden city thanks to the color it gets from the yellow sandstone used for construction of the buildings. Jaisalmar is one the last big towns in Rajasthan closest to the India-Pakistan border and stands in the heart of the Thar Desert. Jaisalmer has come a long ways since being an important town along the ancient camel-train route ran through India and Central Asia. Over the centuries, the fortunes of Jaisalmer have risen and fallen thanks to the geo-politics of the region and, of course, emergence of newer trading routes. The rise in sea trade, especially during the British Era, lent a crippling blow to Jaisalmer. With Independence and the resulting hostility with Pakistan it seemed like Jaisalmer would fall off the map sooner rather than later. But it was during India’s darkest hour that Jaisalmer’s fortunes rose once again. During India’s wars with Pakistan in 1965 and again in 1971 the Indian government realized the importance of Jaisalmer’s strategic position along the border.

Jaisalmer, the Golden City is a major tourist spot owing to its proximity to the Thar Desert and the Sonar Quila. The city is known for Desert Safari and its Jaisalmer Fort, which is a living fort and is also known as the Golden Fort. Inside the fort area, one can find hotels, shops and old and majestic havelis. Jaisalmer attracts a lot of tourists for its desert camel safari. There are a lot of sand dunes in the Jaisalmer and Khuri village, located around 45km from Jaisalmer is famous for su
