Located in the east coast of the Indian sub-continent in the state of Orissa, is one of the four Dhams (Sacred place) of the Hindus. The city is famous for the temple of Lord Jagannath. Puri is one of the holy places described in the ancient Hindu scriptures. Set up probably in the post Kalinga war era, Puri was a knowledge centre by 7th century when “Adi Shankara” visited the place and set-up his own “Math” (Residential School) for vedic studies and hindu culture. Patronized by vedic scholars and powerful Kings of Orissa, Puri became the symbol of oriental philosophy and religion after construction of the temple of Lord Jagannath during late 11th century.
