Pondicherry, is a beautiful city located on the southern coast of India in its namesake union territory. Situated on the Coromandel Coast in the Bay of Bengal, the city is laden with lovely beaches, heritage buildings, backwaters and lush green surroundings. Over the years, this place has been ruled by a number of European colonies, such as the Portuguese, Dutch, British and most significantly, the French. This place was invaded by the French in 1670, who left a deep impact on its tradition and culture. The architectural heritage of Pondicherry is indeed a rich one, including forts, villas, uniquely-designed houses and churches. Similar to other South Indian regions, the population here mostly comprises Dravidian people who speak Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The various festivals and fairs celebrated by the locals of this town are a highlight among tourists. Bastille Day, Sani Peyarchi Festival, Masimagam and the Mask Festival are some of the most important events that are held in Pondicherry.
