The Windermere estate includes 55 acres of undulating rises and dips covered with cardamom & coffee, located on the slopes of the Western Ghats. At an elevation of +1600 msl with ever green forest, an annual rainfall of more than 200 cms make it conducive to extensive types of cultivation. Cardamom, the Queen of Spices known for its aroma and flavouring property, ranked third after saffron and vanilla in value, is mostly grown in Kerala. A mature cardamom plant is about 3 to 4m high with shallow roots and ovate leaves. Flowers are born on pinnacles which emerge from the swollen base of the plant. On the pinnacle are the flowers, they then bear the fruit (capsule) with seeds. Its these capsules which are of commercial value. Given that the plants require a lot of attention, the plantation is always engaged at work.
