Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

Malappuram

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is famous for the wide variety of fresh water fishes that can be sighted in the river here. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is spread over a cluster of islands in a scenic area surrounded by hillocks where the Kadalundi River flows into the Arabian Sea. The place is locally known as Kadalundi Nagaram. This virgin land is the abode more than a hundred species of native birds and over 60 species of migratory birds, like seagulls, terns, sandpipers, sandplovers, red and greenshanks, turnstones, that flock here in large numbers from November to April.



Bharathapuzha River

Malappuram

Bharathapuzha River is also called River Nila. It is the second longest river in Kerala and provides shelter to 11 reservoirs with Malampuzha dam being the largest.  This sacred river is believed to bestow salvation to those who are cremated on its banks, and accordingly sons pay homage to their fathers by performing the "Pithru Tharpanam" ritual on the Karkidaka Vavu day.



Keraladeshpuram Temple

Keraladeshpuram Temple, an ancient and historic Hindu temple of South India, is located at a distance of about 3 km from Tanur town. Tanur, a coastal town in the Malappuram district, is known as one of the oldest Portuguese settlements. The temple is situated close to the Tanur Beach, and it offers a tranquil ambience to visitors. One of the key features of the temple is its remarkable mural paintings depicted on the walls.



Padinharekara Beach

Padinharekara beach offers a mesmerising view of two rivers joining the Arabian Sea. The sight of the river Triurpuzha and Bharatapuzha coming in full force to join with the sea is a sight that you will never forget. Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple

Kadampuzha Bhagavathy temple is one of the major pilgrimage centres of Kerala and holds a unique distinction. There is no idol in the temple, perhaps one of the few such temples in India or the world. A legend goes that Adi Shankaracharya, the revered Hindu philosopher and teacher happened to pass around Kadampuzha which was a vast grassland then. As he walked along, he came across an invisible wall which he realised were Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati met, while the Lord was in the ‘Kirata’ form. It is believed that after Shankaracharya prayed to the Goddess, she appeared before him but disappeared into a small hole. He performed pooja there and later on the temple came to be built at the same place.



Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala

If you visit Malappuram, you should pay a visit to the renowned Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Shala, a sprawling institution dedicated to Ayurveda. In fact, it is a pioneer Ayurvedic organization in India. It is also a hospital and a research centre which is visited by people from all over the world, seeking cure to many ailments. You also get the authentic Ayurvedic massages and other treatments here. Medicines made at the centre are available through many of the outlets in many parts of the globe. Nedumkayam

Pazhayangadi Mosque

Pazhayangadi Mosque is one of the key attractions of Malappuram. It is situated at a distance of around 18 km east of Manjeri. This mosque is one of the most ancient and esteemed mosques in Kerala. The construction of the mosque is associated with Muhammed Shah, a Muslim saint from Persia and popularly known as Kondotty Thangal. The mosque exhibits the example of the Mughal style of architecture and traditional sculpture.



Keralamkundu Waterfalls

Keralamkundu waterfall is formed due to the cascading water from a large rock that has stood there over the centuries. It can be listed under the lesser known waterfalls of Kerala. The medicated water flowing from the Western ghats forests forms this waterfall which falls into a huge stone pit.



Teak Museum

Teak Museum located at Nilambur is a treasure trove of historical, aesthetic and scientific aspects of Teak. It was established owing to the historical importance of the region. The key attraction of the Teak museum is the 480 years old teak tree stump which was brought from Nagarampara forest range. The museum provides the detailed description of the flower, fruit and natural regeneration of teak and also exhibits the prominent characteristics of these species of trees.
