Said to be built on the remains of a shipwreck, the Thikkoti Lighthouse is one of the major attractions of Kozhikode. Thikkoti Lighhouse is definitely one of the most fascinating remain from the ancient Kozhikode as the same was built on the remains of a shipwreck that crashed near the rocky shore of the Payyoli beach.
Kakkayam is a dam site located in Kozhikode of Kerala state surrounded by lush greenery.The distance is about 15 km from Kakkayam Bus stop. 'Orakkuzhi' is a waterfall located just after the Dam. Near the dam location, different animals including elephants can be seen. There is a forest office at top of the dam. You need to take permission from the Forest authorities before going ahead. Cameras are not allowed near Dam area. It is a scenic place which offers a serene environment with a lot of recreational activities to the visitors.
Fed by a natural shower, Mananchira is a man-made freshwater pond surrounding which is the astounded complex, Mananchira Square. The pond was built in around 14th century as a bathing pool by the feudal ruler of Kozhikode, Zamorin Mana Vikrama whereas the Mananchira Square was opened in 1994. Previously, the Square was known as Manachira Maidan and was famous for football. It was a host of many matches as well. Today, it is an architectural glimpse in the middle of the city with its open theater, fabulous landscaped lawns, and musical fountains. Tourists visit here to spend a fantastic evening time amidst the meticulous beauty of park embellished with lush green trees.
Peruvannamuzhi Dam is a beautiful place surrounded by verdant greenery. The reservoir here offers speed boat and row boat ride across the 'Smaraka Thottam' - a garden built in the memory of freedom fighters in the region. There is also a crocodile farm & bird sanctuary located a close to the dam for the wildlife lovers. The Dam is easily accessible by bus from Kozhikode.
Canoli Canal, also called the Elathur Kallai canal was commissioned by the former collector of Malabar, R. Canolly. Its construction was completed in the year 1848 and it was till 1950 that it remained a busy trading port. To explore this canal to its best, there is a facility of boat ride that is frequently taken by the visitors.
Kallai River in Kozhikode District, Kerala is worth checking out. The river originates in Cherukulathur village in Kozhikode District and is connected to the Chaliyar on the south by a manmade canal. Kallai River flows through Cherukulathur, Kovur, Olavanna, Manava and Kallai before finally pouring into the Arabian Sea at Kozhikode. The river is a significant one in Kerala as it is the hub of trade. In fact, Kallai, which lies on the banks of this river, is the core center of timber trade.
Kappad Beach is the place where the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on 20 May 1498. His voyage established a permanent route between Europe and India. This continuous arrival of outside merchants lead to the rule of the East India Company and later the period of British colonial rule. At present, it has a beautiful corniche and park. One can have a complete relaxation therapy at the pleasant beach. The rock studded beach is also known as Kappakkadavu.The idyllic beach is apt for rejuvenation of body and soul. Rocks with unique formations are spread all over the beach. A long queue of coconut trees and glittering silver sand of the beach makes it as beautiful as a paradise.
The Matri dei cathedral, also known as the Mother of God Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Malabar. Locally, it is called the Devamatha Palli. It is believed to date back to 1513 AD when the then Zamorin and the Portuguese reached an agreement wherein the Portuguese were allowed to build a factory in Calicut. A chapel for the Mother of God or Matre de Deo was build adjacent to the factory. The church houses a 200-year-old portrait of St. Mary. Located near the beach, the Matri dei cathedral is as much a place of worship as a structure of wonder.
Krishna Menon Museum at Kozhikode has an exclusive wing dedicated to the renowned statesman late V. K. Krishna Menon, that displays his personal belongings and souvenirs. Adjacent to the museum is an art gallery with an excellent collection of paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Raja Varma. this museum chronicles several episodes from the freedom movement in India in parts.
This 13th century mosque with beautiful wooden carved ceilings and double tiled roofs is built in unique temple style of architecture. The mosque is well known as Sheikh Zainuddin Makhdoom II's mosque, who is the author of the famous book Tuhafat Ul Mujahideen. The mosque houses a stone slab inscribed in Arabic and an earlier form of Malayalam which depicts the story of the Zamorin King of the area.
