Mangalore, an important educational and industrial port city of Karnataka is situated on the west coast, at the confluence of Nethravathi and Gurupura rivers. Mangalore is in the Dakshin Kannada district of Karnataka, about 326 kilometers from Bengaluru, the capital of the state. Mangalore city is spread out over an area of 132.45 square kilometers. The two rivers -Nethravathi and Gurupura encircle the city. Nethravathi flows in the south of the city and Gurupura flows in the north of the city. The rivers form an estuary in the south west of the city before flowing into the Arabian Sea. The new Mangalore sea port, India's ninth largest sea port is located north of the city.

Located on the backwaters of Karnataka, Mangalore is the major port city of the state as well as the location of Dakshina Kannada's administrative headquarters. Nestled in between the mountain ranges of the Western Ghat and the Arabian Sea, it forms one of the chief port cities of the country of India. The place is even frequently used for traffic staging along the Malabar coastal region. Situated at around 350 kms towards the western side of Bangalore, Karnataka's capital city, Mangalore serves as a gateway to the state. Known for its beautiful sea beaches and historical temples, this port city is full of hills, meandering streams and coconut palms.
