Baramulla — Travel Guide

Baramulla, is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also known as ‘the Valley of Flowers’ as it is blessed with extremely beautiful flowers in large number during the spring season. It is the largest town in the district and the fifth most populous town in Jammu and Kashmir. The great Mughal Emperor Akbar visited this place in the year 1508. The place derives its name from two Sanskrit words, ‘Varrah’ which means ‘boar’ and ‘Mul’ which means ‘molar’. The peculiarity of the place’s name has a tale behind. It is believed that Kashmir was once a large lake named Satisara. It was controlled by a demon name Jalodbhava. Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a boar, appeared to rid the lake off the demon. He dug a whole into the mountain with his molar and the water flowed out.
