The Hill-view Park serves as a famous tourist destination of Idukki. One can also spot diverse wildlife in its belt natural habitat. I hope anyone will like that magnificent and wonderful park spreads over 8 acres and flourished with many hundreds of species of crotons, flowers and other vegetations. The park is situated at about 1.5 Km from the Idukki town and at about 350 ft above the dam water level. The park has been carefully and neatly constructed on a small hill and we can easily climb up and enjoy every part of the park which would attract us with countless number of colorful crotons, herbal plants and beautiful flowers.
A technological marvel, this magnificent parabolic structure is the world’s second and Asia’s first arch dam, constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills. 550 ft high and 650 ft wide, the Idukki Arch dam lies close to the Cheruthoni barrage. To its west is the Kulamavu Dam. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located close by. the Idukki Arch Dam is an architectural genius, for the rugged terrain along which it is built. The natural beauty surrounding the dam is breath-taking.
Painavu is an important commercial center and a popular tourist hot spot in Idukki. At an altitude of 3,900 feet, Painavu is situated inside the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. The place is popular for its pleasing ambience and picturesque location. Surrounded by pristine forests and green hills, Painavu is also a good trekking destination. Trekking in Painavu is said to be an outstanding experience and visitors can see many routes through the forests, plantations and to other small towns. The place is famous for its local handicrafts, silk and beautiful local clothes.
Kulamavu Dam is a gravity/masonry dam on the Periyar river. It is one of the three dams associated with the Idukki hydro electric power project in the Indian state of Kerala. If you're a hiking or trekking junkie, Kulamavu is a hill-station that offers the perfect terrain for an adrenaline kick. With some amazing trekking trails, the place is also adorned with equally enchanting surroundings.
Not very known, and hence with very little crowd, Keezharkuthu Falls is ideal for rock climbing, mountaineering and camp tracking alongside the water fall. This waterfall which cascades down a rock from a height of 1,500 m retains its charm in all seasons. the water falls is perhaps one of the best gifts to the residents of the villages nearby. Indeed, it was a pleasure drinking the water from its source, rather fearlessly. Yes, the water as pure as it can be and cold as well.
Murrikaddy is a place best known for its tea and coffee plantations. Also, popular are its small tea-shops across the plantations that serve the royal filter coffee and the spiced tea.
At a distance of around 2 Kms from Idukki Bus Station, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is situated around Idukki Arch Dam. The Idukki Reservoir is part of the Sanctuary. Established in 1976, the sanctuary is situated at an altitude of 450-748 meters above sea level occupying the forest land between the Cheruthoni River and the Periyar River. The terrain of the sanctuary is characterized by steep mountains, valleys and hills. The artificial Idukki Reservoir (Kizhakkilachimala Lake) adds to the scenic beauty of this lovely wildlife sanctuary.
At a distance of 10 Kms from Idukki, Kalvari Mount, also known as Calvary Mount is an important tourist place in Idukki District. The Kalvari Mount Viewpoint offers a charming view of Idukki Reservoir from Idukki to Ayyappancovil on one side and panoramic view of Kamakshy and Mariyapuram villages on the other side. It is one of the most scenic places in Idukki and a must visit place in the district.
