Taraori is a city Municipal committee in Nilokheri Tehsil of Karnal district in the Indian state of Haryana. This town is situated off NH-1, 16 km north of Karnal. Name of Taraori is extracted from the word "Taraine". It was here that in 1191 CE that the Hindu army under Prithviraj Chauhan had defeated the invading army of Muhammad of Ghaur. The following year Ghauri invaded again and defeated Prithviraj's forces at this same site. A wall around the fort is now in a dilapidated condition. A mosque and a tank, said to be the works of Aurangzeb, are still in existence.
Taraori is also famous for its Gurudwara of shri Guru Teg Bahadur (Shishganj sahib Gurudwara), Taraori area is famous for Basmati rice production and there are several rice mils in and around the city. It is claimed that Taraori has one of biggest grain market of Asia. Fort of Prithviraj Chauhan and Basmati Rice.
