Gohana town is situated in Sonepat district of Haryana. It is a Tehsil town of 50,000 population, has its own municipality and a constituency for Haryana Vidhan Sabha. Gohana is surrounded by Jat gotra villages. It is located on Rohtak-Panipat highway and has a railway station on Rohtak-Panipat railway line. From Sonipat, its distance is 40 Km. Earlier, it was part of Rohtak district. In ancient times, Gohana was known as Gavambhavana and was considered a sacred place. Prithviraj Chauhan had constructed a fort here. After defeating Prithviraj in 1192, Muhammad Ghori destroyed the fort. Later, Gohana also became a settlement of Taga Brahmins.
Gohana was called Gavambhavana in olden times and was a place of pilgrimages. The place is said to be the site of a fort built by Prithviraj Chauhan, which was named as Daryapur after one of his chiefs. This fort was damaged by Ghori when he beaten Prithviraj in 1192 A.D. Later the place was occupied by Iagabrahmanas, the district record of 1861 speaks of the town owing its existence to a Rajput and a bania. It was recently a tehsil of Rohtak.
