Palanpur is an important city in the district of Banaskantha in the western state of Gujarat. It is the administrative headquarter and the largest city in the district. The town got its name from the Palansi Chauhans who came and occupied the city in the 14th century. It was earlier known as Prahladanpur, believed to be named after the founder of the place – Prahladan belonged to the Paramara clan of the Rajputs. It was a princely state during the rule of the British in India. Palanpur is a historical city and at one point in time the town was heavily protected by forts on all sides, with entry being possible through one of the seven gates to the city.
