Located in Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur is one of the largest cities of the state. It is also the administrative headquarters of Bilaspur district. A commercial hub of the North East Chhattisgarh region, it is the headquarters of the South East Central Railway Zone. Besides its colourful and vibrant culture, it is also known for its handloom woven colourful soft kosa silk saris and aromatic Dubraj rice. Since the formation of the Chhattisgarh state, Bilaspur has emerged as one of the most prosperous cities of the country. Bilaspur was named after a beautiful fisherwoman, Bilasa, and its history dates back to 400 years. Bilaspur is mainly an agrarian economy and is one of the largest producers of paddy in the country. Mineral resources are available in abundance in and around Bilaspur; hence, it is a centre of most of the commercial and industrial activities. There are many small and big business units in the country dealing with the manufacture of allied, ancillary and support industries in the city. The Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya is a central university offering courses in varied fields. There are many places in the city which attract thousands of tourists.
