Saharsa is a city and a municipality in the Saharsa district in the Indian state of Bihar in the north of the country, east of the Kosi River. It is the administrative headquarters of the Saharsa District, and is in the Kosi Division. Sahrasa is also the name of the assembly constituency, which contains the city and neighbouring parts of the district. The name Saharsa has originated from saharsh which means 'with great pleasure'. The city of Saharsa and its surrounding areas are situated on a flat alluvial plain which had resulted in the formation of the Kosi River basin. The fertile land of Saharsa has been through rigorous changes in the course of the Kosi River which is believed to be one of the largest tributaries of the Ganges that has made the soil to erode. Floods have been the major issue for the terrible connectivity of the area as bridges tend to get washed away.
The place surrounded on the west by the river Kosi boasts an abundance of fish, milk, makhana aprt from some exotic varieties of Mangoes and a summer berry knwon as Litchi. A majority of the religious places of interest are scattered around the district region like the Tara Sthan, Chandika Sthan, Mandan Bharti Asthan, Sun Temple, Laxminath Gosaisthal Nauhatta, Udahi, Karu Khirhari temple and Matsyagandha Mandir etc.
