Lumding is a town and a municipal board in Nagaon district in the Indian state of Assam. The word 'Lumding' owes its roots to a couple of Dimasa words 'Lum' and 'Ding' connoting 'Water' and 'Not there' respectively. So, in other words, Lumding is usually considered to be a town where there is little or no water. The railway township had always enjoyed scant rainfall during the rainy season every year, although the trend has significantly altered over the past few decades. The town is also the gateway to the visually enchanting Lumding-Badarpur hill-tract between Lumding and Badarpur.
These are two very important railway junctions and naturally serve as trading centres as well. Lumding is also the divisional headquarters of the NF railway. Various small scale industries including candle works and trunk factories are also located at Lumding.
