Srikakulam is a city and the district headquarters of Srikakulam district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipal corporation and also the mandal headquarters of Srikakulam mandal in Srikakulam revenue division. The city is believed to have been founded by Balarama. A major part of the district is covered by forests falling under the Eastern Ghats running from the north-east. The town of Srikakulam is located at the banks of the Krishna River and is placed on the northeast corner of Andhra Pradesh. This town came under the kalinga region of ancient India and is known for its various ancient temples. The town has one of the longest coastlines in the state of Andhra Pradesh and its various beaches are also worth visiting. Srikakulam remained a centre of revenue collection for the Nizams of Hyderabad.
There are several temples and gardens in and around Srikakulam. Prominent is the temple of Sun God in Arasavalli, Indira Gandhi Park and Santhinagar Park. Srimukhalingam Temple, on the banks of River Vamsadhara is one of the ancient religious sites constructed during the 10th century. Buddhist stupas in Salihundam, Kalingapatnam lighthouse and the plantations of Kaviti are noteworthy attractions.
